James just moved from B.C. to a school in Ontario. As a grade 8 student, moving half way through a school year, he's having a hard time adjusting to all this change. He feels the reasons for his move are private, and he's not comfortable discussing them with anyone, but people keep asking about it. He feels like after the first two weeks in his new class he doesn't want to be friends with anyone. His teacher, along with the work being assigned, seems so different from what he was doing out west. James is becoming very stressed out. Just recently, he verbally abused his bus driver on his way to school and was given a suspension.
After reading this short story, create a blog post that:
- Highlights some of the key information in the story, in your own words. (What are the issues?)
After reading I think the key information is that it is hard to make friends and keep up with work when you move half way through the year.
- Give an example of at least one strategy James could begin to use that you think would help with his mental health.
The strategy that I would use in his situation is to ignore his classmates and bus driver and then ask the teacher for help because you don't get the work.
- Include a question that a classmate could answer that relates to this topic and/or specific example.
What are the ways you deal with stress and why?
